Our Founder Tiffany Masterson's Holiday Wishlist

December 16, 2015

Somewhere after all of the family stuff, the joy of the season, the best part about the holidays is... we admit it!... well, the presents! Whether you're giving or receiving, it’s pretty much the reason for the season, right?

But it always comes with a caveat: what makes for a good gift? We can definitely rule out ugly sweaters, useless tchotchkes, underwear, and those obvious joke gifts (a snuggie? Again? Seriously?). For us, a good gift is all about what comes from the heart. Or, at the very least, from this list!

Here's our sure fire wishlist of our favorite gifts for the holiday season. Let’s get to it!

1. Lite+Cycle Home Compostable Candle

A host of dreamy scents and wax made from biodegradable fungi makes this not only a completely unique gift, but a thoughtful one, too.

2. Lobmeyr Balloon Double-Painted Butterfly

Super luxe, hand painted, hand engraved... the list of adjectives go on, but these glasses stay on our list.

3. Deb Perelman’s Smitten Kitchen

Our definite go-to cookbook by the always fabulous Deb Perelman. There's just too many irresistible dishes to count in here!

4. The Beachwaver

The curler to end all curlers. If you’ve got hair, this is the gift you need. Do yourself a favor and pick one up already! Beats socks as a stocking stuffer any time.

5. Jen Mayer Gold Elephant necklace.

We mean, how could we not? Elephants and diamonds? It’s called a wishlist for a reason! Like we said on Instagram, whether or not this will actually be waiting under our tree this year is another issue entirely.

Our favorite Smoothie Bowls

November 19, 2015

Let’s face it. Trying to eat clean and healthy is pretty hard to do, and all those hashtags and Instagram posts aren’t helping, each one endlessly guilting you on your feed as you like away, regardless. We mean, when do you even have the time to reach your #goals? Is there a Starbucks run anywhere in there, too? Well luckily, we’ve found a quick and painless method to get you on your way to health harmony: it’s the smoothie bowl. Yes, the ubiquitous too-pretty-to-eat meals that seem embarrassingly simple to make, yet you never do. Now, you’ve got no excuse, cause’ we’ve got a list that’s gonna fix you right up!

1. Acai Berry

A double dose of detoxifying Acai and berry blend to boot, also a good way for you to get your greens in (there’s some hidden spinach in there, believe it or not).

2. Coconut, Banana, and Oat

A tropical combo with oats that add a dash of protein from the oats. Throw in the seeds and you’ve got all your bases covered.

3. Vegan Berry Crunch

A bowl that’s literally too pretty to eat, and vegan to boot! Spice it up with the extra granola and chia and you’re good to go.

4. Avocado with Cashew cream

If you’re feeling adventurous, check out this recipe that plays with creamy textures. The avocado does wonders with the cashews!

5. Chocolate and Banana

Finally, we’ve got a really decadent combo for you. It’s almost better than ice cream, honest!

And that's it, hope you get inspired to #eatclean!

DE's Favorite Instagrammers

October 29, 2015

At Drunk Elephant, it goes without saying that we're totally, completely addicted to Instagram. When we're not gushing over all of our serums and cleansers, we're no doubt tapping away through our own feeds, and obviously, we take notice to the 'grammers who stand out. So we've gone ahead and compiled a must-follow list of our absolute favorite Instagram accounts (because we're addicted and we know you are too, probably!).

1. @dollyandoatmeal

Lindsey Love's account is a gem of clean eating, beautiful scenery, and loads of natural goodness. From the grainy baked goods to the natural simplicity of the smoothie bowl, every scroll is a total motivator to live a cleaner life (at least for a day or two!).

2. @beigecardigan

With 1.8 Million followers, you've probably seen one of her memes running through your feed, and if not, you're missing out. Jessica Anteby has ridiculously funny takes on basically everything. There’s literally something for everyone, and we mean everyone. Follow her ASAP!

3. @livingprettynaturally

Kate is a well of inspirational quotes and natural beauty tips that we just can't get enough of. If you like natural living, her account is a must-follow. Too-pretty-to-eat snacks, wise words, and of course, a touch of makeup and skincare make this one of our absolute favorites.

4. @yoga_girl

Rachel Brathen is a yoga guru we've constantly got on our radar, if not for her insane flexibility or beautiful beach pics, but for her inspiring us to get our namaste on. Besides the whole yoga bit and always inspiring, she’s got a cute pup to boot, too. Isn’t that enough to seal the deal?

5. @beautybybritanie

It goes without saying that we love a good natural skincare account, and Beauty by Britanie is no exception. Follow for constant updates on the who’s who of natural skincare and make-up and all sorts of other pretty and natural tidbits.

6. @yonderwayfarmer

When we're sick of the hustle and bustle of the city life, Farmer Jason gives us a glimpse into the simple life. If you want to see what goes on in a modern farm (as filtered by Instagram filtered, of course) and a family living out their lives in the Texas frontier, this is the go to account. And they've got baby piglets!

7. @ohsheglows

We do love a good crunchy food blog, but sometimes, natural eating gets a bit glum. But Angela Liddon of Oh She Glows proves that eating healthy doesn't need to be bland and brown. Follow her account for pretty and healthy desserts and lots of other inspiring recipes. Even if you’re not ready to dive right into the whole lifestyle, it’s still worthy of a peek!

8. @ashruns100s

When we want a bit of get-up-and-go inspiration, we look to Ashley Walsh's feed full of her running conquests. Besides her beating every possible running goal we’ve ever had and still not breaking a sweat, she’s always posting something interesting or inspirational to screenshot.

9. @beautyliestruth

Krauss & Jessica Assaf are committed to promoting healthy alternatives to problematic products, as well as keeping their followers up to date on the latest in natural skincare and makeup and all the other nasty things lurking in the products we use everyday. Now that's something we can get behind, no doubt about it.

10. @goop

We gotta give it up to goop for constantly filling our feed with drool worthy lifestyle stories and totally inspirational everything. From healthy eating, travel, and fashion, goop's got it, it’s the mother of ‘em all. If you haven't followed them yet, what are you waiting for? You’re bound to find something.

Read our Lippe!

October 20, 2015

Drumroll please... we'd like to officially announce the latest addition to our (already fabulous) DE Family! Read our lips... we'd like you to meet our Lippe!

Yup, that's right: it's our first ever product for your lips. We have a serious addiction to all things lip balm around these parts and figured, why not make our own that upholds all of the all-amazing (not all natural!) ideals that make us, well, us? That means clinically-proven ingredients that work hard to keep lips moisturized without any of the nasty additives. After all, we've heard that statistic about how many pounds of lip products women end up ingesting in their lifetime, right?

We're launching it just in time for fall and winter: the healthy blend of marula, avocado, cranberry, and mongongo oils come together to soothe, moisturize and protect your lips from cracking and chapping, even in the coldest months. Plus, the blend is even contained in a lightweight balm that won't leave your lips feeling greasy and heavy. It's pretty darn addictive, if we do say so ourselves. So, keep your eyes peeled to a Sephora (and DrunkElephant.com) near you to stock up for yourself!

Going Dairy Free?

October 01, 2015

Let's face it (and this one is a tough fact): dairy is not good for your skin. Although many dermatologists aren't jumping on the dairy-free bandwagon, most aestheticians can agree that your skin is better off taking a break from it. We can imagine you're not convinced yet, but hear us out. Your skin might thank you!

The lowdown:

Basically, it all comes down to this:

- Dairy products contain hormones that cause inflammation and insulin spikes that cause problem skin.

- Dairy cause your skin to produce excess sebum (that's a fancy word for oil) that clogs pores and breeds lots of acne causing bacteria.

- All dairy products contain these hormones, unfortunately nothing is a safe bet. Milk, cheese, kefir, even raw milk can't escape it!

It's pretty simple, but the resolution is what's hard. Giving up dairy is never an easy task, but it can be done!

Simply put, start with a slow taper on milk/dairy products for the next 90 days, and make sure to keep note of all the changes in your skin. After that, start working in milk alternatives wherever possible, we recommend coconut milk (I mean, who doesn't like coconuts?), but definitely not soy, as it messes with your hormones as well, especially if you have acne-prone skin.

In fact, DE is going to make it a bit easier for you; here's some dairy-free substitutes that we highly recommend:

Rice Milk: Ideal for people with allergies to the nutty alternatives.

Almond Milk: A good source of Magnesium and Vitamin E.

Coconut Milk: Has a low starch content and and is soy, gluten, and cholesterol free!

Hazelnut Milk: Rich in Vitamin C and Folic Acid,

Oat Milk: Cholesterol free and loaded with Vitamin E.

Hemp Milk: Rich in Omega 3.

Cashew Milk: Contains 38% of your daily need of Copper.

Yes, you can sneak some brie every once in awhile. We won't tell. But for your next latte? Go coconut. Or almond. Or hemp. Go wild!

All about: Boutique Fitness

September 03, 2015

So you're finally getting around to it... finding that perfect workout routine that's going to change the game, that is. It's been a long time coming, and after all of those false starts and impromptu splurge-y girls nights, you're ready to bite the bullet. Enough is enough! But as for finding a regular workout routine that you don't have to near-drag yourself to each and every morning? Well, there might just be a solution for all your exer-woes. We're talking, of course, about the boutique workout. Lets just say this isn't your Billy Blanks, Made-for-TV Tae Bo we're dealing with here. There's no three easy payments of $14.99, just highly-specialized routines that challenge your body, shape you right up and, of course, make it fun and addicting (even more so than your other vices, believe it or not!). We've even taken out the hardest part for you, and compiled a list of our favorites; so now, there's no excuse for not having a bit of get up and go. Let's get started!

1. SoulCycle: Everywhere

https://www.soul-cycle.com

We're going to start off with the granddaddy of them all: SoulCycle is by far the most well known of the bunch, and you've probably heard it in passing at least once. The concept is simple; a workout based around cardio-heavy workouts (weights, jogging, dancing, and of course, cycling) with an emphasis on community, so you can rest assured that you're not in this alone. SoulCycle lasts around 45 minutes a class, and is ubiquitous; chances are no matter where you are in the world, a SoulCycle (or SoulCycle-esque) class is not far from you, making it one of the more convenient choices on our list.

2. ModelFit: NYC

http://www.modelfit.com/

You've probably heard about ModelFit as the go to place for the requisite Manhattanite to get their daily dose of exercise, or as Karlie Kloss' go-to when she needs a little tone up. But don't let the hype fool you: the ModelFit team does not mess around. Their approach is based on getting you "Model Fit", not "Model Thin". They offer classes that fit the needs of beginners and pros alike, focusing on body driven weights, cardio, and even boxing. Classes come in single pricing or packages and you pick the dates, making it totally non-committal... just in case you sleep in.

3. CityRow, NYC

http://www.cityrow.com/

Another NYC fave on our list, CityRow is a cardio-based class with a focus on (you guessed it!) rowing. Not only does CityRow offer state-of-the-art rowing machines (they use actual water!), but they also offer classes with routines focused on body-sculpting exercises, yoga, and much more. Classes can be attended individually with the option of weekly and unlimited packages (which is a plus!).

4. Barry's Bootcamp, Select Cities

http://www.barrysbootcamp.com/

Barry's Bootcamp is a chain that reaches coast-to-coast and even parts of Europe. It's been frequented by A-Listers, athletes, and in-the-know city dwellers alike. But what makes Barry's stand out? The experience. More akin to a club than a gym, the instructors' enthusiasm and pumping music is sure to motivate even the most resistant of us. Workouts are split between 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of free weights; making it balanced and easily accessible to every fitness level.

5. Bikram Yoga, NYC

https://bikramyoganyc.com/

Yes, we couldn't forget hot yoga. The more famous of the bunch, Bikram Yoga is by far the best deep stretch you're gonna get. With several locations and multiple rooms per practice, it's prolific to say the least. The instructors are top notch, who direct every level of yoga practitioner through the 26 poses and breathing exercises that make up the routine. Classes can be booked in singles, or weekly.
